This session will cover operational best practices when working with your Tech Transfer offices and understanding key definitions pertinent to areas of intellectual property and the commercialization life cycle. This session will also cover how your institution can leverage existing administrative operations and resources to ensure implementation of effective export control checkpoints for IP licensing and other areas commonly managed by tech transfer offices (e.g. MTAs, NDAs/CDAs, IIAs, Core Facility Agreements, etc.). This session is for all experience levels and institutions of all shapes or sizes, so please make sure you don’t miss it!

Bio: Josef is currently the Director of Export Controls at the University of Washington. Previously, he served as the Export Control Officer at the University of Rochester and also worked in private practice focusing on intellectual property law. While in law school, Josef served as Managing Articles Editor for the Rutgers Computer and Technology Law Journal and worked in the Rutgers tech transfer office through their Intellectual Property Externship program. Upon graduation from law school, Josef passed the patent bar and received the ABA/BNA Award for Excellence – Intellectual Property Law. Prior to law school, Josef was a research biologist at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and a research fellow in the FDA's center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER).

Bio: William is currently Assistant General Counsel, Contracts Manager (ORPA) at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. In this capacity, William oversees both the G&C contracts team and the institutional export compliance program. William specializes in areas of export compliance, research contracting, and IP commercialization. William has previous experience working in the Syracuse University tech transfer office, while also working with small startup clients at the Syracuse University Innovation Law Center and the Penn State Happy Valley Launch Box. William is a licensed attorney in both New York and North Carolina, as well as a certified ITAR/EAR ECoP®.
